Absolutely loved this property!!! Yes, there are a lot of steep stairs and yes, it is an old house with imperfections but we seriously couldn't have asked for more charm. The location was very convenient, the house was clean and comfortable and the property manager was very responsive and easy to work with. Would highly recommend!
Location was great. The home is historic, and was comfortable but does needs some TLC. Bath amenities were unfortunately absent, no bath soap in either bath, although there was hand soap. Kitchen was fully stocked. Prompt attention from the property managers. Overall the stay was fine.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home with us. Everything was perfect. Location couldn’t have been better. We were very lucky to find such a cozy place with lots of space. People watching while sitting outside on the balcony was so much fun. Cheers!
Stayed here with some girlfriends over the weekend since we were signed up for the race. The house was AMAZING! We all enjoyed our stay! Already looking for a reason to come back and book this beautiful and comfortable home again! Thank you for sharing your home with us.
High ceilings, comfortable bedrooms in a great location. The balconies are fun too. Location is great, walking distance to many places and easy parking. Kitchen could be better stocked, but it worked for us. Felt like we were living in history!
The property was great and it was wonderful to stay in such an old home with so much history. The owner was very responsive and promptly responded to any questions. Loved the pictures and the family tree. Some felt the kitchen was not equipped adequately.
My family of five enjoyed this house. Nice, convenient location at corner of Jones and Price. Plenty of available on street parking. House is not fancy and shows its age a bit, but has charm and met all of our needs. Savannah has a lot to offer and everything is located within a short drive.
The apartment was just what we wanted -- a little bit away from the hustle/bustle of downtown and therefore quiet but also near enough to walk to most sights. It was old but well-kept and very suitable to our needs with 2 1/2 baths 2 bedrooms. It was in a nice area of town with a Kroger store within walking distance. We spent a very comfortable four nights there. Rental was prompt and easy, and getting in and out of the apartment was easy as well. All in all, I would recommend to anyone who wants a quieter place to stay that's still within a reasonable distance of downtown.
I stayed here for a Bachelorette Party and was not disappointed. The home was spacious and well decorated. Mary was quick to respond to any questions and was very helpful. Walking distance to downtown area. Would definitely recommend and stay again.
Overall, this place was awesome. The location couldn't have been better. The neighborhood was great. Was sad to see one of the outdoor spaces under renovation, but with 2 others, we more than made it work. The only suggestion I have which I left in a note for the owner was to have more than one key. The deadbolt locks on both sides of the door with a key. I didn't feel safe leaving someone locked inside while they were sleeping, so early morning coffee shop, or late night strolls had to be planned carefully. Other than that....we had a great time. We loved all the history of the house located inside as well as the decor. We will be back.
The house was in a great location. Although not directly downtown, it was an easy walk with so many beautiful houses and parks to look at. Parking was easy, as long as you follow the rules. We had a lot of fun.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Just sorry it was for only two nights. More than enough room for the four of us. Check in process and lockbox procedure was easy. There was plenty of parking on the street. The location was perfect. We could walk to anyplace in the city; the house is located a little distance from the northern river area so there was less traffic and less noise. Internet and TV technology was not the best but adequate and on vacation we had little use for them. This house is decorated with antiques and interesting pictures along with comfortable couches and chairs. Beds were too comfortable! We enjoyed coffee on the porches. In summary we recommend this unit for everyone; we may make this place an annual vacation destination!
We loved the house and all the antiques. We definitely appreciated the cleanliness of the house. Communication was terrific and procedures clearly outlined. We were here this weekend to watch our 13 year old daughter compete in a gymnastics invitational, so having a family-friendly atmosphere was very important to us. As we toured the area - particularly River Street - we were very aware of the importance of noise ordinance. It's nice to have options and Savannah truly has something for everyone. The McKenzie House was good fit for our needs! We enjoyed all the pictures and loved the fact the family tree was current and on display. Amazing history and the house had so much character.
We enjoyed our stay at the house. There was plenty of room for our family to spread out and the beds were very comfortable. This house is not for someone who enjoys technology though. There were very limited channels and the wifi did not work great. Overall our experience was nice staying here.
Property is as described. Its fun an cozy house. We had fun meeting the Mckenzie's through all the old pictures and the family tree. Addie became the conversation for the weekend and it made the stay a lot of fun. The kids give it a thumbs up and would love to stay again.
We could not have been more pleased with the time we had on our vacation. Staying at this property was one of the biggest factors in the success of our trip. It's located on one of the most picturesque streets in town. Parking was supremely easy with spots right out front on the street. We parked and pretty much left the car there as everything was within walking distance. Plentiful dining options are nearby with Clarys, made famous in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, being an absolute highlight for us. Excellent value with this property, its interior possessing a welcoming and cozy decor. The whole home was tastefully appointed and full of interesting antiques. Was like walking right off the pages of a history book. We would absolutely recommend it to friends and anyone in the market for a top-notch vacation experience. Can't wait to come back next year!
This was our second time to Savannah, and we were very pleased with this lovely historic home. It is in a great, quiet neighborhood on the famously pretty Jones Street. The home is about halfway between the river and Forsyth Park, and you can easily walk to each in about 15-20 minutes. It was very convenient to leave our car right out front on Jones street and walk everywhere throughout the city. The furnishings are cozy and antique-y, and add to the historic charm of the house. There's a great side porch overlooking The neighborhood that was our favorite place for afternoon drinks. The manager was very easy to work with and knowledgeable about the area. We would certainly recommend this great house to others, and we will aim to stay here again next year.
My wife and I found this house to be exactly what we hoped for during our family trip to Savannah. We slept 4 people very comfortably. The location was perfect, we wanted to be in a historic neighborhood rather than on a commercial strip. This is close enough to walk to stores and restaurants but quiet at night except for cars driving by. It has a lot of character, and is cozy rather than spartan or stark like some vacation rentals. It does feel a lot like you are visiting a friend or a family member rather than staying at a hotel. There are family photos on the walls and the bookshelves are full of books, so you know you are borrowing someone else's home, but in a good way. Plenty of toilet paper, bath and dish soaps were provided. The home was remarkably clean. Beds were comfortable. We used the kitchen mainly to make coffee and breakfast. We sat on the side porch before and after dinner, with cocktails and we very much enjoyed the neighborhood atmosphere. Check in process was easy. We have no complaints and would choose to stay again when we return to Savannah.
What an amazing house! This house is rich in Savannah history - from the genealogy chart of the original to current owners hanging in the parlor to the pictures in the upstairs hallway displaying the original 1800s layout of the house! The location is perfect - the neighborhood was quiet and we were never more than a mile from anywhere in downtown Savannah. Mary, the owner, is quick to respond with questions before and during your stay and provides detailed instructions of the house in a binder which recommendations places to visit and eat (very helpful!). I would definitely recommend this house and Mary to anyone wanting to enjoy Savannah, but not have to pay the downtown-housing fees.
We loved being on Jones Street, within 20 minutes walk of virtually everything in the Historic District. Parking on the street was always available, but we walked most places except at night. The house itself is comfortable, especially the beds, and there were plenty of towels, etc. Four of us celebrated Thanksgiving at the house and the large dining room table came in handy. The kitchen is not state of the art, but we knew from Mary ahead of time not to count on having everything, so had our daughter bring what was needed for making and serving dinner. Our only real complaint is that the house needs some maintenance--it is looking a bit worn, and very few of the doorknobs are in working order--they can only close with hook-and-eye closures, which detract from the historic charm. Also, we would have liked a few more reading lights, especially in the sunroom. A relatively small amount of expense and effort would definitely add to the appeal of the house, which does have a lot of history and charm going for it. Mary was extremely helpful and responsive, she answered every email promptly and provided a lot of helpful information. This house is very reasonably priced and for two couples provided a good amount of space.
Owner Response
This home was built in 1875 and the doors and windows are original. That means they are over 140 years old. The city of Savannah has strict rules about not replacing doors and windows in the homes in the Landmark Historic District, as they are made of old growth wood and are protected valuable parts of the homes in Savannah. Most doors at this house close without using any hook and eye closure but they do have those on them as locks.
Never having been in Savannah before, we really appreciated being right in the heart of the historic district and within walking distance of so many sites of interest. The home is loaded with antiques and aptly decorated to give one the feel of the late 1800's. Comfortable beds, nice showers, enough space for us two couples. While we didn't scratch the surface of things to see and do, highlights for us were: -walking, walking, and more walking....taking lots of pictures of the historic homes. -inside of St. John the Baptist Cathedral -stairways and cobblestone streets along River Street -view of the freighters & tugboats from roof of the Bohemian Hotel (Rocks on the Roof) -Fort Pulaski....unbelievable! This is a must see. So much history here and so nice that it's fully accessible. We wound up spending over two hours here before walking the beach at Tybee (and catching/releasing 3 small living starfish) and eating at AJ's. -Blue Orb Ghost Tour. The 10pm tour was booked so we went on the 7:30 adult only. Very informative and worthwhile. Highly recommended.
This home was the perfect size for five 50+ ladies on a "girls' trip." Nicely appointed and close to food and the historic district. We loved being able to walk everywhere! The porch was our favorite morning coffee hangout. I'd have given it a five star rating except there are some minor maintenance things that need to be addressed.
Owner Response
This guest never specified what her maintenance issues were, but historic homes require constant upkeep. There is always something to do. The owner is literally sleeping there at least one night a week which is rare for a vacation rental. It means nothing gets neglected for long, as he will notice things a manager would not catch in a walk through. I also really appreciate specific items being texted or emailed to me so that I am aware of what guests are noticing. -Mary
This townhome right in between Forsyth Park and the River was the perfect place for a long weekend in Savannah! We were six girls in our late twenties down for a wedding and birthday weekend, and couldn't have picked a better place. The property manager is extremely accommodating and was a pleasure to work with. The bedrooms and bathrooms were big and clean, not to mention the beds were comfortable! The half bath on the main level is nice and the sunroom is a good place to lounge or have two additional guests on the pull out sofa. The kitchen isn't super well stocked, but with all the delicious restaurants in Savannah we barely used it! The rocking chair porch is also beautiful and a great place to have cocktails in the evening or coffee in the morning. Definitely recommend and will check there before staying elsewhere on our next visit!
I just had my bachelorette weekend here and it was perfect for 6 women. The best girls weekend ever! Everything was clean and taken care of. We enjoyed cooking meals and lounging on the porch, when we weren't exploring. Everything you need or want is in walking distance. I will definitely stay there again on my next visit.
My 4 friends and I stayed in this home for a girls getaway we do once a year. This place was affordable and great! 5 girls getting ready everyday, never ran out of hot water. Wonderful neighborhood within walking distance to anything we wanted to do downtown. Felt very safe as well. The house was accommodated very nicely and it was great staying in a place with so much history. I would stay there again if given the chance.
My sisters, and I along with our husbands spent a three day weekend in this beautiful historic house. The location was excellent (close to all in the historic district), and the house was so much more than we expected. Beautifully decorated, big, and exceptionally clean. Mary was very responsive through the whole rental process. We can't say enough about how much we loved this house and our stay in Savannah. We will definitely Escape Savannah again!
We stayed here for a 3 day weekend getaway, and we absolutely loved the house!!! Great location! We tried out a number of the places to eat that was recommended in the book in the house and all of them were fantastic! Definitely will be staying here anytime we visit Savannah.
We loved staying three nights on the "prettiest street in Savannah"! Not only was it an easy walk to Forsyth Park and River Street, but we were able to park our car right in front of the house the entire time (for FREE), and felt extremely safe during our entire visit. The authenticity of the house is wonderful and gave us the true Savannah experience. The house was not just a place to stay, but was one of the highlights of the entire trip. While sifting through the many choices on VRBO, this one seemed like a great choice because the house was not staged and created as a rental, but was a true residence...the real deal...how folks in Savannah really live. (Also, the cost to rent was MUCH less than similar rentals. We could not believe how much space we actually had.) It was wonderful sitting on the porch in the morning and later after dark as we reflected about our day. From the minute we opened the door, we knew we had made the right choice. The view up (and down) the staircase was fantastic. You will not be disappointed if you choose to stay here....clean, great wifi, and as others have said, Mary is great.
Everything was just as described online. The home was very authentic in regards to period pieces of furniture, etc. It was very accommodating to our group of 5 people, we never felt crowded. It was certainly within walking distance to all that historic Savannah has to offer. Would definitely stay here again on any return trips. Thanks again.
This property was the perfect mixture of old Savannah Charm. With the original brick walls, pictures of the past covering the walls, and beautiful antique furniture you really feel like you're immersed in old Savannah. The two porches were the highlight for my family during our stay; we were able to stay up late at night talking and watching the nightlife while relaxing in the rocking chairs overlooking the streets. I would fully recommend this property to anyone wishing the stay in the heart of Savannah while still maintaining the peacefulness away from the bustling nightlife.
I recently came to Savannah for a girls weekend and I'm so happy we chose this property for our stay. There were 4 in our party and we had plenty of room for everyone. We all loved the house and all of the beautiful furnishings. It has a very cozy feeling for such a large home. The antiques and pictures throughout are so lovely. The reviews I read prior to booking our stay referenced how clean the property was, and it was certainly very clean when we arrived! There were plenty of linens for the beds and the bathroom. The upstairs bathroom is much larger than the pictures show! I loved the windows at the top that let the natural light in. We were able to park our car upon arrival and walk everywhere. You can park right in front of the house for easy unloading - just watch the street signs for days/times to move your vehicle for street sweepers. We walked to River Street in 15 minutes or less with no problems. We had breakfast at Huey's on River Street - a must! I would suggest you get a free map of the Historic District and just walk, walk, walk. It's the best way to take in the beauty of Savannah! Clary's Cafe is on the same street as the house, just about 2 blocks away, so a very fast walk. It is open for breakfast and lunch and reasonably priced. Our favorite dinner of the weekend was at The Crystal Beer Parlor on West Jones Street. The food is AMAZING and the beer selection is awesome, too. Get the Greek Lamb Burger! It was divine. We are so glad we chose this house. We wanted to be able to experience beautiful "Old Savannah" by being right in the heart of the city. This is the way to go! One last thing, thank you, Mary, for making this whole process so easy! It was a pleasure dealing with you and we look forward to our next trip to Savannah!
This is a well furnished older home in a close-in suburb of Savannah; a little under a mile from the main tourist area of the city. It is large, comfortable and filled with art, books and the accumulated knick-knacks of a lifetime. In addition to two bedrooms, living room, dining room and updated kitchen and washer dryer there are two separate lounge areas (one downstairs and one upstairs) that create a very interesting and usable floor plan. Clary's Café (only three blocks from the house) is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. We also had a good experience at the Green Truck Neighborhood Pub. Whenever we went "downtown" we parked at the Whitaker Street Garage which was safe, reasonable and very convenient.
Owner Response
I'm happy to see the 5-stars and very happy this guest was pleased with the house. I do need to point out that the official Historic District is exactly one square mile and this house is within that mile, in the southeastern quadrant. A square mile is a small area, and this is one of the smallest historic districts in the country. Calling Jones Street a "suburb" is a misnomer and unfortunately this review will be misleading to those who are unfamiliar with the area. Jones Street is indeed a residential street, and it is quiet in comparison to streets like Liberty, Oglethrope and Broughton (all 0.2 to 0.6 miles away) with bars open late into the night. I keep a nice map of the downtown area on my website for those who are curious to get their bearings. In reality Jones Street is centrally located and it is a famous landmark in our very carefully defined and designed city.
The house was absolutely wonderful and beautiful!!! There is plenty of space and I loved looking at the family history and pictures. The location is perfect. Can't wait to go back and explore more of Savannah and come back and relax in a very nice home away from home. Thanks again! I loved it!!
This property is gorgeous and has all of the Savannah charm that you would expect when visiting. The home has wonderful antique furniture and great pictures of both its renovation and of historic Savanna. I rated the home as 'good' only because there is a main road next to house and you can hear each car as it passes; although it is not super busy. Additionally, finding all of the light switches was a bit of a scavenger hunt, which might be an excellent challenge for the kids. This should not stop anyone from staying in the home because it's charm and proximity to the historic area makes up for it. It was so close that we even took the Pedicab home.
We had a wonderful time even though it rained every day. If we could we'd buy a home like this one :) Savannah is a wonderful home away from home for us. Thanks Mary for a wonderful time. Caroline
We have used home away for many of our vacations and getaways. The home was great! Everything was clean in the home and nice decor and furnishings and just as described which we were thrilled about. Staying in a historic home made the trip to our favorite historic city in Georgia all the better. Located just on the outskirts of the Historic district it was still close to everything and just a short walk to River street. Very affordable and we absolutely loved it. If we visit Savannah again we hope this home will be available!
Fellow VRBOers, if you're looking for a gem in Savannah, look no further! This fabulous townhouse is large, quirky, fun, well stocked, in a quiet neighborhood AND within walking distance of River Street! What more could you ask for?! I rented this lovely unit for a 'girl's weekend' in May and immediately fell in love. The unit is perfect for families or a group of ladies, offering several gathering spots for chit-chat and private nooks for moments alone. The home was complete with all the amenities we needed, CLEAN and in close proximity to several wonderful eateries… There’s a great little sushi place and a pizzeria within 2 blocks, you don’t even have to cross the street. Normally when I visit Savannah (I’m down 2-3 times a year) I stay around Bull Street, which is closer to the heart of the historic district though not nearly as serene as this place. Plus, management contact was very sweet and incredibly accommodating, further enhancing our trip. I can’t wait to visit again!
Owner Response
Thank you so very much for this generous review. This house has gotten a bathroom upgrade (brand new bathtub!) this week and next time you come you will be even happier!
The house was absolutely beautiful! The location was just perfect, with the town shops & river side being within a few blocks of walking distance. It was an extremely clean and well taken care of house. One of the most relaxing rooms in the house was the sun room. Another awesome view was from the side balcony. We really caught on to the historical vibe when we first arrived at the house. With it being in such great condition, we will definatly be returning to Savannah soon! Our whole family would strongly recommend staying in this historical house, especially if you have an history nerds in your family! :)
Owner Response
The owner of the house is going to be thrilled to read the recent reviews. He loves to know people were happy with the place. Some lovely comments have been left in the journal in the house this Spring as well. It's great to have this special house on my list of offerings! It's a family friendly home at a family friendly rate and I hope to get repeat business from all the reviewers. Thanks again! -Mary
The property and location were excellent. The house was exactly like it was described and pictured. We were in walking distance of all the parks and restaurants. Highly recommend Firefly Restaurant which is two blocks away. Will certainly stay here on next trip to Savannah.
We spent two nights in this historic townhouse in Savannah. Our travelling party comprised one single person, a married couple and a toddler. The house was very comfortable for our needs, and the stairs to the bedrooms were manageable. The annex room off the queen bedroom was the perfect place to put the toddler's crib. The townhouse is in a very good location, including walking distance to a supermarket. We parked the car out front and did not move it for two days. Our only gripes - the sheets on the queen sized bed were very uncomfortable (polyester maybe?) and there could have been a bit more cooking equipment, but we managed (but providing laundry detergent was very helpful).
Owner Response
Thanks for all the kind words and feedback. We have since added more cooking equipment.
We came back from our vacation only 3 days ago but I could not wait to write this review. Everything was perfect from the beginning to the end. Mary was great to deal with and the check in and check out process was simple and hassle free. Once I opened the door of the house we were thrilled...Oh My God..it was beautiful! The pictures don't make justice...the house was bigger than I imagined. It even had a deck with outdoor furniture that is not in the pictures!! The king size bed was out of this world, so comfortable...The location of the house is excellent, we walked everywhere. We fell in love with Savannah, such a beautiful charming city..We will be back since we did not have enough time to do everything we wanted!! The kids loved Fort Jackson and Fort Pulaski...I loved the Mercer House, the squares, everything!! Thank you so much for sharing your house with us.
Owner Response
Thank you! It's true this house looks best in person. It's about 1800 square feet and has a very cozy and high quality feel to it. A great family home. I have added a photo of the "deck" mentioned here which is over the sun room at the back of the house.
This house in the historic area of Savannah was the perfect location. It was about a 15 minute walk to the river front. Once we arrived we parked the car (directly in front of the house) and did not need it again until we left. 2 nights was not enough time to experience all we wanted to see. We did get in a ghost walk, a carriage ride, a walk on the river front and a trip to the city market and Paula Deen's store. There were several restauraunts within walking distance. We had breakfast at Clary's both mornings. YUM!!! There was a Kroger within walking distance as well. The house was perfect for the 4 of us. All we could ever need was provided. The house was filled with antiques. We loved the lay out wih the bedrooms upstairs. There were 3 porches to enjoy the outside. Mary was an absolute delight to deal with. She was very accommadating and helpful. Would definetly book this house again for a future visit and would recommend it to friends! What a find!!!
Owner Response
I am beyond thrilled to read this review. This was our very first guest at this house after its launch as a vacation rental and I am so glad everything was found to be satisfactory.
Spacious and great location
Location was an easy 10 minute walk to the historic area or to Forsyth. Free/easy street parking. The house was very spacious for 2 of us, with lots of areas to enjoy. Loved the side porch and an outside deck upstairs. Grocery store is a 10 minute walk away which was convenient to get supplies to cook breakfast in the kitchen.
Love Jones St
My 3 boys and I stayed here for 4 nights. The house was clean and had all that we needed for our stay. Jones street is a beautiful street that Is centrally located. We walked or rode bikes everywhere downtown. Parking was great outside the house. We enjoyed renting bikes to cover more ground of Savannah. Make time for the beach on Tybee Island
Beautiful house
It was a beautiful house in a great location! I would recommend this house and I will stay here again when visiting Savannah!
